About Role Play Games

Role Play Games is a set of four pretend-play activities built around everyday jobs: shopping, cooking, cleaning and packing. Each one puts a child in charge of a real household task in miniature — filling a basket and paying, working through a recipe, tidying a room, or packing a bag with the right things in it.

The cleaning game is a good example of what makes these work. A bedroom scene has a teddy, a game and a book out of place, with a toy box and a bookshelf to put them in; the living room has popcorn, paper, a remote and a toy to sort between the trash, the table and the toy box. Children are rehearsing the exact sorting decisions you want them making at home.

How to Play

  1. Choose an activity: shopping, cooking, cleaning or packing.
  2. Look at what the scene needs doing.
  3. Drag each item where it belongs.
  4. Finish the task and move on to the next room.

What Kids Learn

  • Everyday life skills and tidying routines
  • Sorting things into where they belong
  • Sequencing the steps of a task
  • Independence and responsibility at home

Questions Parents Ask

Which activities are included?
Four: a shopping game, a cooking game, a cleaning game and a packing game, each set in its own scene with its own tasks.
Does it help with real chores?
It rehearses the same decisions — which items belong in the toy box, what goes in the bin, what to pack. Many parents find children transfer the sorting idea to their own room.
What age is it best for?
Around ages 3 to 7, which is when pretend play is at its most useful and children are starting to take on small responsibilities at home.
